Managing Prostate Cancer Pain and Symptoms

Real men admit they hurt, because there are many ways we can help.

Prostate PainIf you have pain, problems with incontinence or impotence, or other symptoms, talk to your doctor or nurse. We have many ways to help now, and researchers are always developing new treatments. Our goal is to help you manage your symptoms so you can focus on what matters to you.

Bone Pain Relief

Radiation therapy is very effective in relieving pain when cancer has spread to your bones. Combined with hormone therapy, it may help you live longer with fewer of the side effects of hormone therapy.

Drugs that can help with bone pain include:
  • Drugs that contain radioactive elements (Radiopharmaceuticals)
  • Drugs that slow cancer growth (Bisphosphonates)
  • Steroids
  • Pain medicines

Nausea, Constipation and Diarrhea

Medications can help.

Incontinence and Impotence

Medications and devices can help. We also have a sex therapist who specializes in cancer patients.

Complementary Therapies

These treatments don’t fight cancer, but they help many people feel better. If you are interested in any of these therapies, talk to your cancer team first. Make sure the therapy won’t interfere with your treatment or cause more side effects.
  • Therapeutic massage
  • Acupressure
  • Acupuncture
  • Herbal and nutritional supplements
  • Biofeedback
  • Visualization
  • Meditation
  • Yoga
